Definition - What does Shifting Tools Equipment mean?
As the name suggests, the function of the shifting tool is to open, close & shift the position of the flow circulation devices or sleeves inside the bore hole. The operations performed using shifting tools are conducted without making the hydrocarbon production process to halt. Shifting tools falls under the well workover and intervention processes and are used to improve the life of an oil well.

Inside a wellbore, tools called as sliding sleeves or circulation devices are used whose purpose is to direct the flow of hydrocarbons towards the well surface during the production phase. Shifting tools plays important role in adjusting these circulation devices or sliding sleeves by running them down the borehole. These shifting tools runs on the slickline in the vertically drilled wellbore and are used along with the coiled tubing if the wellbore drilling is either horizontal or directional drilling.
Shifting tools have following characteristics:
- These are designed and built in such a way that they automatically gets release i.e. they run down slickline once sliding sleeves has travelled to its full extent.
- These tools comes with specific connections and fishing necks.
- For safety purpose, these tools have shear pins installed on them.
