Definition - What does Logging While Drilling Equipment mean?
Logging While Drilling, commonly known by the acronym as LWD is a technique of analysing the geologic properties of the rocks on a real time basis as and when the drilling activities are going on. In this technique, the logging tools are transported inside the wellbore which are fixed onto a bottom hole assembly (BHA) and as BHA propels down the wellbore, these logging tools perform their operations for what they intended for and communicate the data with the engineers in the control room.

The LWD technique is into existence since early 1970’s. This innovative technique provides tailored and reliable solutions to undertake geological challenges and is capable of logging the geological parameters in any direction and in a tough environment. Some of the logging tools that are used as LWD and can be mounted on the BHA and lowered into the borehole include large drill collars, sensors, batteries and electronics. LWD can increase the production of the well and reduce well construction costs.
Electromagnetic drilling, acoustic logging, nuclear logging and nuclear magnetic resonance logging also forms the basis of Logging while drilling technology.
